La productividad es una medicion basica del desempeño de las economias, industrias, empresas y procesos. La productividad es el valor de los productos (bienes y servicios) entre el costo de los recursos e insumos (salarios, equipos y similares).

El control de la productividad por parte de un gerente requiere disponer de herramientas que le permitan escoger y controlar varias mediciones razonables, observar las tendencias y luego identificar las areas a mejorar, incidiendo en la mejora del desempeño colectivo de los procesos individuales.

Asimismo es un hecho aceptado que para prosperar, las empresas deben visualizar en terminos globales a sus clientes, proveedores, localizacion de instalaciones y competidores.

Existe una necesidad de contar con estrategias globales enfocadas en: mejorar la tecnologia de trasporte e informacion, cumplir con las regulaciones locales exigidas, capacidad de respuesta a la demanda de bienes y servicios, reducir los costos de importacion y de otras barreras de comercio internacional y buscar ventajas en costos de recursos y mano de obra.
